Naxos Carnival's "Lambadifories" - The Parade of Torchlights

On the Saturday eve before the annual Carnival parade, the streets of Naxos overflow with a crowd of torchbearers in a revival of an ancient custom known as Lambadifories. 

Dressed and masked in black and white costume, hundreds of natives and visitors of all ages take part. The custom has gained a popular following and attracts participants and onlookers who visit the island to witness and experience this popular Carnival weekend event. The route begins in the maze of streets around the castle in the Old Town of Naxos and flows onto the wide square in town, at the port, where the dancing and merriment continues into the night.

Preparations begin at the Kastro, in the Old Town at 19:00 with the official start of the parade beginning at 21:00, and ending at main square at the port of Naxos.

Koudounati (bell-strapped men)

Each year, on the last Sunday (Lent) of the carnival season, an old custom, Koudounati (bell-strapped men), is revived in Apiranthos.

Men strapped with bells and carrying Dionysian phallic symbols known locally as somba, stir up a racket while parading through the village alleys in a procession held to welcome the spring season and exorcise evil spirits.

The procession winds up at the village main square, where its participants join forces with other carnival-dressed revelers.

Together, they plunge into celebration with singing and dance accompanied by traditional bag-pipe (tsabouna) and percussion (toumbaki) sounds for a party that lasts well into the night.

Kordelati - Foustanelati

Kordelati, Foustanelati and other traditional customs are performed in the villages of  Agersani,Galini and Eggares on the last Friday and Saturday of Halloween, with young men, dressed in the national costume of foustanela or wearing colorful ribbons forming groups and visiting neighboring villages to accompany young women in folk dancing. 

The groups are led by a “standard-bearer” (bairaktaris) who holds a cane with a scarf attached.

The women respond by offering the young men sweets and wine.

The custom, which is also associated with historical events, is thought to have promoted in the past the acquaintance between young men and women with a view to marriage.

Some scholars point out that it takes place at the same time of year as the ancient Anthestiria (the Feast of Flowers), in honor of the god Dionysus.

ΔΙΟΝΥΣΟΣ ΚΑΙ ΑΡΙΑΔΝΗ

 

Σύμφωνα με το μύθο, όπως αναφέρει ο Διόδωρος ο Σικελιώτης, ο Θησέας, μετά την εξόντωση του Μινώταυρου με τη βοήθεια της Αριάδνης, κόρης του Μίνωα, απέπλευσε από την Κρήτη με προορισμό την Αθήνα, παίρνοντας μαζί του την όμορφη κόρη.

Θαλασσοταραχή τους υποχρέωσε ν’ αγκυροβολήσουν στην Νάξο, τότε ονομαζόταν Δία, για να ξεκουραστούν.

Ο Θησέας άραξε το πλοίο του στο μικρό νησάκι, «τα Παλάτια», όπως τ’ ονομάζουμε σήμερα και η Αριάδνη, ταλαιπωρημένη έγειρε στην αμμουδιά και την πήρε ο ύπνος. Ο Θησέας με τους συντρόφους του παρέμειναν στο πλοίο κι αποκοιμήθηκαν. Τότε ο Διόνυσος που είχε δει την Αριάδνη και την ερωτεύθηκε, επισκέφθηκε το Θησέα στον ύπνο του και του είπε να φύγει χωρίς αυτήν.

Εκείνος αντέδρασε, αλλά ο θεός επέμενε, δηλώνοντας την υπεροχή του λόγω της θεϊκής του ιδιότητας. Φοβούμενος τις συνέπειες της τιμωρίας του θεού, ο Θησέας υποχρεώθηκε να φύγει.

Στη συνέχεια ο Διόνυσος πήγε κοντά στην Αριάδνη. Εκείνη μόλις ξύπνησε τον είδε να στέκεται δίπλα της και να της λέει λόγια τρυφερά. Τον ρώτησε αμέσως για το Θησέα, αλλά εκείνος της απάντησε ότι είχε φύγει, ενώ της έδωσε να πιει κρασί από ένα χρυσό κύπελλο και της πρόσφερε ένα χρυσό στεφάνι, έργο του Ήφαιστου, με πολύτιμα ινδικά πετράδια στο σχήμα εννέα αστεριών.

Κατ’ άλλους το στεφάνι ήταν δώρο της Αφροδίτης και των Ωρών για τους γάμους τους. Αναφέρεται δε, ότι ήταν τόσο λαμπρό ώστε οι θεοί το έβαλαν στον ουρανό να λάμπει πλάι στ’ άλλα αστέρια και το ονόμασαν αστερισμό της Αριάδνης.

Θυμωμένη με το Θησέα η Αριάδνη δέχθηκε την πρόταση του Διονύσου. Εκείνος την πήρε και την πήγε στο όρος Δρίος, το σημερινό βουνό Κόρωνος. Από εκεί έφυγαν για τον Όλυμπο.

ΝΑΞΟΣ: Ανοιχτή συνάντηση για τον συντονισμό των αποκριάτικων δρώμενων

 

 

Την   Τετάρτη 1 Φεβρουαρίου θα πραγματοποιηθεί ανοιχτή συνάντηση για τον συντονισμό και την υλοποίηση των δράσεων του Διονυσιακού Καρναβαλιού 2017. Όσοι επιθυμούν να συμμετέχουν καλούνται να παραβρεθούν στο Δημαρχείο την Τετάρτη 1/2/2017, στις 19:00.
